The Russian-manned cargo ship that vanished in the Atlantic last month is said to have been found near Cape Verde. According to the French Defence Ministry, coast guards have confirmed the Arctic Sea was spotted Friday afternoon off the west African coast but Russian authorities have cast doubt on whether its the same ship.
The Arctic Sea has been missing since it sailed through the English Channel in late July. The vessel with 15 Russian sailors on board and carrying a load of timber sent radio messages as it sailed along the coasts of France and Portugal before all contact was lost.
Russia’s ambassador to Cape Verde said a Russian naval frigate headed for the area had yet to verify the ship’s identification.
Speculation as to what happened includes the boat was a carrying secret cargo – possibly drugs – to a commercial dispute. Security analysts have cast doubt that ship was hijacked by pirates.
