Activists campaigning for the abolition of migration controls have been holding a demonstration near the French port of Calais.
They are from the No Borders group who want total freedom of movement in Europe with abolition of all immigration and borders scrapped. There are around a 1,000 migrants in makeshift camps in the Calais area, all of them trying to smuggle themselves into Britain. Protester Stefan said: “Our message is obvious; no borders, we want a world without without states, a world where people can move freely.” There are around a 1,000 migrants in makeshift camps in the Calais area, all of them trying to smuggle themselves into Britain. This section of northern France, closest to the British coast, has been a flashpoint for more than decade. Since the closure of the Sangatte camp near Calais many migrants have taken shelter in the forests and streets nearby. Migrants from countries like Afghanistan, Somalia and Eritrea try night after night to smuggle themselves into Britain, most of them in the back of trucks. Some have tried to make through the Channel Tunnel. The British Government has said it has no idea how many migrants are living illegally in the UK, with opposition parties calling immigration policy a complete shambles. The No Borders group wants all migrants to be allowed into Britain with no questions asked.
