One of China’s best known dissidents has been formally arrested on charges of inciting subversion.
Liu Xiaobo was detained late last year, accused of promoting a petition calling for an end to one-party rule in China. The move will come as a blow to supporters and human rights groups, with Xiaobo moving closer to a formal trial. His supporters had hoped the ruling Communist Party would release the dissident after the 20th anniversary earlier this month of the Tiananmen Square crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. Lawyers in China say 53-year-old Xiaobo will face up to 15 years in prison if he is indicted and convicted.
