Just weeks before he hosts a G8 summit 72-year-old Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is facing a new sex scandal.

It comes as Italians show their anger over his policies and allegations over his private life. The new revelations focus on escort girl Patrizia D’Addario who said she had sex with Mr Berlusconi. Another woman alleges she was paid 10,000 euros as a present. A man who brought the women to dinner with Berlusconi is being investigated by magistrates in Bari on suspicion of abetting prostitution. Political observers say the latest scandal may cost Berlusconi his job. As the investigation goes on in Bari Mr Berlusconi has dismissed the allegations as what he calls “false trash.” Meanwhile Italians are going to the polls in local and provincial elections. They are also voting on a referendum to change how their electoral system is run. People in 102 cities and 22 regions including the biggest, Milan, are eligible to cast their votes. The results are expected later today. Those results will be analysed closely and are seen as a barometer of Berlusconi’s popularity.
