The row over MPs expenses in Britain rages on, a day after police said they would investigate some cases. Parliament chooses a new Speaker tomorrow after Michael Martin was forced to step down over the way he handled the scandal.

Media reports say the police are likely to focus in particular on the cases of two MPs and a member of the House of Lords. One of them is MP David Chaytor, who has confirmed that he is being investigated. He said: “I’ve said all along that I will cooperate fully with any investigation. I want to explain my case, explain what happened. I’ve acknowledged that there is an error here and I want to clear my name.” Meanwhile, a newspaper that has been drip feeding revelations about expenses today alleges that dozens of MPs have made inflated council tax claims.
