The National Ignition Facilty has opened in California. Its aim is to recreate nuclear fusion, the reaction at the heart of the sun.

The research centre has been set up to primarily to study the conditions that exist in nuclear explosions. The centre also recreate the same conditions on Earth that exist in supernovas, black holes and the cores of giant planets. But the third mission is the possibility of creating a clean and limitless energy source.
