Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has been awarded the 2009 Pritzker Prize for Architecture in Buenos Aires. The award honours a living architect whose buildings produce “consistent and significant contributions to humanity”.
The Thermal Baths of Vals in Switzerland is one of Zumthor’s best-known and best-loved buildings. A luxury spa, it was completed in 1996 for the Hotel Therme and consists of a stone maze of hot water pools. Zumthor says the award of 100,000 dollars, which goes with the prize, will allow him to “to be happy to go on dreaming even longer”.
