Correa favourite to win re-election in Ecuadorean poll
Text size Aa Aa

Ecuadorean president Rafael Correa has cast his vote in the election that he hopes will bring him a second term of office.

Correa, a left wing ally of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, is a strong favorite to win the poll – he’s gained popularity by standing up to international oil firms over debt repayment and introducing pensions, free school lunches and a higher minimum wage. His chief rival is likely to be former president Lucio Gutierrez, who was ousted four years ago. The election will go to a second round unless any candidate can get more than 40 per cent of the vote and a clear 10 point lead on his nearest rival.
