Ukraine is today commemorating the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

23 years after the world’s worst ever nuclear accident, a ceremony has been held at the site. President Viktor Yushchenko was among the officials who took part. An untold number of people have been affected by radiation poisoning, with conflicting reports on the total number who have died or developed illnesses. The abandoned plant was supposed to be made safe with thick concrete covers. However, the radiation hazards remain, with the covers showing signs of decay. However, new work is now underway to completely encase the dangerous parts of the plant.
