Two Israeli police officers have been injured, one seriously, after a vehicle was reportedly rammed into a security checkpoint. The incident happened north of Jerusalem. A Palestinian man has been arrested.
Violence in the West Bank yesterday left three Palestinians dead, the highest number of deaths there in more than a year. The unrest comes amid a visit to the region by the US Middle East envoy George Mitchell. After meeting the Palestinian President, Mitchell said he wanted an Arab peace initiative to be part of the US push for the creation of a Palestinian state. He said: “A comprehensive peace in this region is in the national interest of the US, it is in the interest of the Palestinian people, it is in the interest of the people of Israel and of the entire region. A two-state solution is the only solution.” In one of the violent incidents yesterday a Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli security forces during a protest against Israel’s building of a barrier through the West Bank.
