More than 100 people were arrested in midnight raids in central England on suspicion of planning to attack a power-station run by the German company E.On. Nottinghamshire police said they turned up “specialist equipment” which led them to believe the group posed a serious threat to the safety of the coal-fired plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

Scores of police officers descended on Sneinton in Nottinghamshire, 16 kilometres away from the power station. One eyewitness said: “I looked through the window and I saw all the vans, and loads of police and about 1 o’clock, 3 o’clock they were all coming down from The Mounts, from the school, and there were some people handcuffed.” Coal-fired power-plants have been the target of environemental protestors several times in the past, angry about the greenhouse gases they release.
