Zimbabwe’s new prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been involved in a car accident in which his wife, Susan, has died.
The opposition leader has been admitted to hospital but the nature of his injuries is unknown, although they have been described as not critical. Tsvangirai only recently joined his foe President Mugabe in a power-sharing government, after months of wrangling about cabinet jobs for Tsvangirai’s MDC party members. He beat Mugabe into second place in the first round of presidential elections last March, but then pulled out fearing more bloodshed after Mugabe suporters went on the rampage against MCD activists. Mugabe was then re-elected uncontested in a second round. Last September the two men signed a power-sharing deal brokered by South Africa, which is only now being unevenly set up.
