It is an icon for car lovers everywhere and once was the pride of France. Now more than three decades after it reached the end of the road, the Citroen DS is back! The classic saloon has been relaunched, reviving the legend. The first in a new range of cars bearing the “DS” insignia will go on sale early next year, although the revamped version is rather different from the original, as Citroen acknowledges.
“We are going to rejuvenate the myth,” said marketing director Xavier Chardon, explaining that today’s rules on safety and pollution mean a straight copy of the original DS is not possible. Known as “goddess” or “deesse” in French because of a pun on its initials, the DS has regularly been voted the most beautiful car of all time. An emblem of French motoring style between 1955 and 1975, it was the official car of politicians, including General de Gaulle. He survived an assassination attempt, while riding in a Citroen DS.
