Thousands of people took to the streets of Berlin to catch a glimpse of cinema’s great, good and glamourous, on the opening night of the city’s film festival. British actress Tilda Swinton will preside over the jury that will give a Golden Bear to the best film after eleven days of screenings, parties and deal- making at Europe’s first big festival of the year.
Fittingly, this year’s event opened with a thriller about an international bank that takes huge and morally dubious risks in order to control its increasing debt. “The International” stars British actor Clive Owen and was devised years before the banking crisis hit. But its timely release has its director, Germany’s Tom Tykwer, rubbing his hands with glee.
