Under new direction, crisis-hit Iceland could move swiftly toward EU membership if a new centre-left government decided to apply. Still being formed, it is on the verge of taking office.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn told British newspaper The Guardian that Iceland could win EU membership by 2011.
The Social Democrats and Left-Greens just putting the new government together are cautious about EU entry. A referendum might be held over whether to start talks. Support for EU membership has risen after Iceland’s economy collapsed last year.
