At least two children and one adult were killed after an attacker burst into a creche in Belgium and stabbed them to death. Eleven other children and two adults were injured. Three youngsters are said to be fighting for their lives in hospital.
The alarm was raised just after 10am local time when a man described as having a white painted face and black-ringed eyes arrived at the playgroup in the town of Dendermonde, thirty kilometres northwest of Brussels. He is alleged to have attacked people in two classrooms – in police words “running amok” – before escaping on a bicycle.
The authorities say a man in his 30s was arrested in a nearby supermarket and hour and a half after the attack and is due to appear before magistrates in the town. Officials would not confirm reports in the Belgian media that he is known to the local psychiatric services.
