The American governor accused of trying to sell Barack Obama’s senate seat has vowed to fight attempts to sack him.

Rod Blagojevich has been impeached by the Illinois House of Representatives, but insists he is the victim of long-standing rivalry. “This was not unexpected, it was a foregone conclusion,” he said. Foregone conclusion or not, the vote against Blagojevich was overwhelming: 114-1 in favour of impeachment and a possible trial in the Illinois senate after Obama’s inauguration. Obama himself presented new members of his team, the latest his choices for America’s top spymasters. He nominated Leon Panetta as CIA director. Panetta was White House Chief of Staff under Bill Clinton, and is an intelligence outsider as Obama seeks to clean up America’s image tarnished by accusations of torture. Obama named retired Admiral Dennis Blair to oversee all 16 US spy agencies, as Director of National Intelligence.
