Pressing on with its offensive in Gaza, Israel has rejected any truce with Hamas, saying it is ready for “long weeks of action.”

As air strikes continue into a fourth day, Israeli ground forces are gathering along the border, poised for a possible invasion of the coastal strip. The bombings so far are only the “first stage out of a series of measures that the cabinet has approved” according to the Israeli Prime Minister. Ehud Olmert has vowed to strike Hamas with an “iron fist” while treating Gaza’s civilian population with “kid gloves.” But a UN agency says dozens of civilians have been killed. The overall death toll, according to Gazan officials, now stands at around 360 Palestinians. Since the bombing began, four Israelis have been killed by rockets fired from Gaza.
