Daybreak brought the first clear view of the destruction suffered by people in Gaza overnight. Homes, offices, shops and more lay in ruins. Although Israel said it is targeting militants, in a place as overcrowded as the Gaza Strip, civilian causalities are inevitable.
A UN agency estimated that at least 50 of the hundreds of dead were civilians, including several children, some of whom were buried today. Overnight Israeli warplanes hit the Interior Ministry and a laboratory in the Islamic University, a major cultural symbol for Hamas. Israel claimed the lab targeted had been used for developing weapons and explosives.
