He said he didn’t want the top job, but Herman Van Rompuy now finds himself charged with the almost impossible task of forming Belgium’s next government. Currently parliamentary speaker, the Flemish Christian Democrat not only needs to end Belgium’s third political crisis in a year but also steer the country out of its economic malaise.

Widely respected, Van Rompuy — who is set to succeed scandal hit prime minister Yves Leterme —will need all his political skills to bridge Belgium’s cultural divide and avoid further speculation over the country’s future.
