There were clashes for a second night running in Malmo, southern Sweden. Youths set fires and hurled rocks at police in unrest sparked by the closure of an Islamic cultural centre and mosque in a Malmo suburb. One person was arrested.
Violence erupted after police removed squatters who were protesting against the eviction of an Islamic group from their premises in a mainly immigrant neighbourhood. One of the demonstrators said the police had promised dialogue, but suddenly three large tractors came and containers were put in front of the premises. “We became really angry and started throwing things at the police,” he said.
