The German actor Horst Tappert, known to millions of television viewers as Inspector Stephan Derrick, has died in Munich at the age of 85. The super sleuth became a favourite worldwide, with the eponymous series broadcast in more than 100 countries.

Tappert became hugely popular as the star of what became one of German TV’s biggest commercial successes, although some criticised the lack of action in the series. Filmed from the early 1970s to the late 1990s, its popularity has been perpetuated by frequent repeats.
