An Italian adventurer trying to row solo across the Pacific has had to be rescued agonisingly short of his goal. Alex Bellini was some 100 Kilometres away from success after rowing 18,000 kilometres during 10 months at sea. Tugged to safety off Australia’s east coast the 30 year-old said he had made the right decision to call for help after exhaustion set in.

Reunited with his wife, Bellini began his epic attempt from Lima in Peru, living on dried food and distilled water without setting foot on land. During the voyage the Italian explorer, who has already crossed the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, said he never felt alone because of the thousands of emails he received from fans.
