Athens and at least five other Greek cities have been hit by riots following the death of a teenager, shot by police.

Shop windows were smashed and cars burned by hundreds of youths who were pushed back with teargas.

It appears the dead boy, 15 years old, was with a group of a half-dozen who were throwing stones at a police car. The police opened fire when one of them produced a molotov cocktail.

The government has ordered an inquiry and has arrested the police involved, who are being questioned. A large crowd marched to the police station in Athens where they are being held.

The interior minister has gone on television to apologise for the incident.
