Israel’s outgoing prime minister Ehud Olmert has told the army to prepare for military action in Gaza, as the five-month truce with Hamas continues to unravel. Daily rocket attacks across the border, and Israel’s retaliatory air strikes, have stretched the truce to breaking point.
Four Palestinians were killed in an air raid in northern Gaza this morning. Israel said they were preparing to launch another missile attack over the border.
Israel has sealed off Gaza, closing all border crossings and cutting of vital aid. It is refusing to lift the blockade despite appeals from the UN and the European Union. Three quarters of a million people in Gaza depend on international humanitarian aid to survive.
