California’s governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency, as wildfires continue to burn out of control. The fires are raging between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, an area home to several tv and movie stars, including Oprah Whinfrey and Rob Lowe. Their homes are safe so far, but others have lost everything.
At least 13 people have been hurt, and a 98-year old man died after being rescued: it is not clear if his death is directly linked to the fires.
Hot, dry 110 kph winds are fanning the flames. More than 100 homes have been destroyed, including that of Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd. Rob Lowe described the scene near his house as ‘Armageddon.’
