An immediate ceasefire and the option of sending regional troops to the DRC have been called for by African leaders meeting in Kenya. The regional heads also called on the UN Security Council to strengthen the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force, MONUC, and provide it with adequate resources.

But the UN Secretary General stressed that MONUC can only do so much. “MONUC will continue to work to the full measure of its capacity with the Congolese government and with other parties concerned to ensure that a maximum number of civilians are protected. But I must stress that MONUC’s capacity is stretched to the limit,” Ban Ki-moon said.

The leaders also called for the creation of humanitarian corridors to help hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
