France’s President has ordered the immediate re- arrest of a man freed in error despite being charged with rape. The suspect, 48 year old Jorge Montes was on remand in prison. It was alleged he was a serial rapist but a judge made a mistake and wrongly signed a release paper. In French law a suspect accused of a violent crime and thought likely to re-offend is automatically detained awaiting trial.

The error comes as France’s judiciary is in up-roar over their treatment by the country’s minister of justice. They recently held a protest in Paris calling for the resignation of Rachida Dati saying her abrasive manner and constant criticism is unjustified.

However with a recent opinion poll claiming the majority of the French public has little confidence in its own judges, this latest error is more ammunition for the minister.
