Kosovo’s leaders have hailed the news that former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari has won this years Nobel Peace Prize.

A UN envoy to Kosovo, Ahtisaari was unable to reach a conclusion under his mandate.

But, Kosovan Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said the decision was the right one.

But, the award to Ahtisaari will no doubt wrankle with Serbia.

Yesterday, Balkan neighbours Montenegro and Macedonia recognised Kosovo’s independent status.

Earlier this week, the UN supported Serbia’s call for an International Court of Justice ruling on Kosovo’s status.

More than 40 states, mostly western, have already recognised Kosovo’s independence.
