A centre dedicated to migrants has been inaugurated in the capital of Mali, Bamako. The European Commissioner for Development and the French Immigration Minister were there for the opening of what has been described as the first centre of its kind in Africa.

A Malian official said the centre will provide help for potential migrants who want to leave the country, and for those who arrive back, having been re-patriated after unsuccessful attempts to start a new life elsewhere.

The European Commission is funding the centre with 10-million euros over the next five years.
