A Syrian intelligence post may have been the target of a car bombing this morning in Damascus.
Seventeen people died and around the same number again were injured in the explosion close to the main road to the airport. It was also close to an important Shiite pilgrimage site said to house the grave of a grand-daughter of the prophet Mohammed.
The Syrian authorities have estimated that up to 200 kilogrammes of explosives were used. It is the first car bombing in Syria since the assassination of the military commander of Hiz’bullah seven months ago. Five days ago Lebanon announced that Syria was massing troops along its northern border . Damascus said it was reinforcing its internal security.
