US and Afghan forces have exchanged gunfire on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
US military officials claim two of their helicopters came under fire from a Pakistani border post while flying over Afghanistan.
But the exact details of the skirmish differ widely. Pakistan says its soldiers fired warning shots after the US helicopters entered its airspace in the north of the country.
And Pakistan’s new President said the country would not allow its territory to be violated, even by friends:
“Unilateral action of great powers should not inflame passions of allies while violating a nations sovereignty is not helpful in eliminating the terrorist menace. Indeed, this could have the opposite effect,’ he said.’
The rugged Pakistan-Afghanistan border region is seen as a crucial battleground for the US and NATO’s fight against al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
