Pope Benedict has arrived at the popular Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes. During this first trip to France as pontiff, the Pope has made appearances in front of thousands. He has also found an unlikely ally in his push for those in public life to engage more with religion.
President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is twice-divorced and married to Italian-born singer and former model Carla Bruni, has angered the country’s opposition by breaking a political taboo and speaking openly about religion.
They say that as the leader of a secular state it is not his job to be promoting Christian ideology.
