On this, the seventh anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, the Mayor of New York has slammed the renovation of the Ground Zero site as “desperately slow”.

The first steel beams of the Freedom Tower memorial were only installed this week.

Michael Bloomberg says the delay is caused by too many people being involved in the decision making. He wants the agency in charge of the project sacked.

He is determined the planned memorial will be finished for the 10th anniversary .

The two men running for the American presidency will join thousands of relatives of the victims at Ground Zero after a week of political sparring, in which Democrat Barack Obama was accused of being sexist .

While talking about Republican policies Obama said: “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.”

The Republicans insisted Obama was being rude about their vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin.

At the Republican party convention she had said the only difference between “a pitbull and a hockey mom (like her) was lipstick”.

But the Democrats pointed out that McCain had used the same “pig in lipstick” phrase himself last year to describe Hilary Clinton’s campaign.
