The focus has been firmly on Barack Obama in recent days but an anticipated announcement from John McCain could change all that. His campaign team has said he has chosen his running mate and will reveal the name later today.

It is thought former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will get the nod. The ex-Massachusetts governor has significant experience in economic affairs which McCain is perceived to lack.

Separately, McCain paid tribute to Obama for winning the Democratic nomination in a campaign TV ad. He said it was “a great day for America.”
