Numerous countries are piling political pressure on Georgia and Russia to end their military confrontation.

Foreign ambassadors have been a constant presence at the foreign ministry in Tbilisi.

It is now preparing for the arrival of the head of the OSCE and French EU Presidency.

The French have proposed a plan for demilitarised autonomy in South Ossetia.

“We would like to highlight again the fact we support the territorial integrity of Georgia and we call for an immediate ceasefire,” said French foreign ministry spokesman, Rolan Galargi. “We are going to discuss further with the local authorities to prepare for the arrival of the Presidency of the European Union, Bernard Kouchner. The French foreign minister will arrive tonight, together with Alexander Stoop who is the President of the OSCE

The two men will go on to Moscow for talks there.

US envoys are also in Tbilisi. Washington has warned that any escalation of fighting would risk significant damage to US-Russian relations.
