Of all the questions prompted by Radovan Karadzic’s 13 years on the run, one of the most frequently asked is: how did he spend his time?
Heavily disguised by his bushy beard and glasses, Karadzic managed to move freely around Belgrade.
Using the false name Dragan Dabic, he was a regular contributor of freelance articles to the city’s “Healthy Life” magazine. Karadzic also gave public lectures and worked at a private clinic as an alternative health practitioner.
But the game was up when he caught a bus in Belgrade on Monday evening, and secret agents swooped.
Officials say the security services were on the trail of Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic when they stumbled upon Karadzic.
With Karadzic behind bars, the authorities say they will intensify their efforts to capture Mladic, who is facing similar charges.
