Britain says it is treating as serious claims made by Iraqi militants holding five Britons hostage. In a video obtained by the Sunday Times newspaper, a man named as Alan appeals for the government to hasten the group’s release.

More distressingly, another detainee known as Jason is alleged to have killed himself in May. The claim is made in a statement on the film which is signed, “The Shi’ite Islamic Resistance in Iraq”.

Armed militants, disguised as police officers, kidnapped the four bodyguards and a computer expert at the Finance Ministry in Baghdad in May last year. Gordon Brown said he discussed the issue of the five hostages with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Saturday.

There was no news of the men until a video featuring one of them was released last December. Britain’s Foreign Office says it is working hard to verify the authenticity of the latest video.
