Pentagon to rerun air tanker competition

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has announced that the US Air Force is to swiftly re-open a competition for new aerial refuelling tankers.

The contract to build the planes was won by US defence contractor Northrop Grumman and European plane maker EADS.

The contract was awarded in February, but after a protest filed by EADS’ rival Boeing, the Government Accountability Office in Washington ruled that there had been “significant errors” in the way the US Air Force handled the competition and urged a rerun.
