With London in the grip of a spate of fatal stabbings police in the city have set up a team of officers to tackle knife crime. The creation of the 75-stong taskforce comes hard on the heals of the 18th killing of a teenager this year.
Police say the crimewave is now their top priority. They have arrested more than 1,200 people and seized hundreds knives during a six-week crackdown sparked by the growing number of teenage stabbings.
The taskforce will continue this work, with special officers deployed in the worst affected areas of London. The violence, much of it involving youth gangs, has provoked intense debate and soul-searching among social commentators on the underlying causes.
