At a press conference in Paris Ingrid Betancourt rejected the controversial claim first reported on Swiss radio that a ransom had been paid to secure the hostages’ release. She said the behaviour of the two FARC guards who were overpowered in the helicopter indicated no money had been handed over: “He was ashamed. He was afraid. I don’t think anyone who had just received a ransom would have had an expression like he had.” She had earlier described the rescue operation as “extraordinary, perfect” and “flawless”.
