French President Nicolas Sarkozy on a three-day visit to Israel aimed at reinforcing his image as an ally of the Jewish state has addressed the country’s parliament, the first French president to do so since Francois Mitterrand in 1982,
“ The security of Israel, which France backs can never be truly satisfied until it lives alongside a independent, viable, modern and democratic Palestinian state. The truth is it is time for this conflict to end.”
Sarkozy, the first French head of state to visit Israel in 12 years will meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem.
Earlier Sarkozy accompanied by his wife, Carla Bruni, laid a wreath at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial museum.
