Illegal immigrants have set fire to one of France’s biggest deportation centres outside Paris. The blaze began after inmates set mattresses alight in protest over the death of a Tunisian immigrant over the weekend. Authorities confirmed twenty people had been taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, but none were seriously injured.

After widespread unrest, and with two buildings severely damaged, all 273 occupants have now been evacuated to centres elsewhere. Police have confirmed a forty-one year old Tunisian immigrant died on Saturday.

An investigation into the death is under way.
