The French president has paid a visit to a chapel in eastern France where the bodies of six children who died in a collision between their bus and a train lie. A seventh child died in hospital in Geneva.

The 50 children and six adults were on a school trip when the accident occured in the small town of Allinges yesterday afternoon. Twenty five people were injured – three of them are in a serious condition. The bus apparently got stuck on the rails at a level crossing and was struck by the train.

An investigation is underway but there is speculation human error could be to blame as several witnesses said the bus started crossing as the barriers were already closing. The bus driver is being questioned by police. Psychological assistance is being provided at the children’s school. It is France’s worst accident involving school children in 25 years.
