German diary farmers boycott milk deliveries

Dairy farmers in Germany have launched a nationwide strike which they say will last until they are offered a higher price for their product. Union representatives say they will boycott milk deliveries to dairy factories for a week or longer.

Support for the action appears solid with the unsold milk being fed to calves or dumped as agricultural waste. The producers are furious at EU plans to increase output quotas and bring down the market price across the union.

However, Brussels claims it must respond to the growing global demand for milk, especially from Asia.
