Bloodshed as clashes erupt at Gaza-Egypt border

Thousands of Palestinians have been demonstrating in Gaza to demand the reopening of the border crossing between the Strip and Egypt. The Hamas supporters were also protesting at Israel’s blockade of the coastal territory, imposed after repeated rocket attacks.

Their rally took place a day after Egypt re-sealed the breached frontier, and shortly after tensions at the border erupted into violence.

Palestinian gunmen and Egyptian forces exchanged fire at the Rafah crossing. One person was killed and dozens of others injured.

Palestinians have been pouring across the frontier since Hamas Islamists blasted holes in sections of the barrier on January 23, to let Gazans stock up on supplies.

Egypt closed the crossing again after talks with Hamas which runs Gaza and denies any role in Monday’s fighting.
