Rio’s King of the Carnival accepted the key to the city in the a ceremony that kicked off the world’s most famous party. King Momo will lead the week-long festivities that reach their high point in spectacular parades over the weekend. The King is an architect in real life but he easily took to his royal responsibilities, commanding his subjects to “submit to revellery” and forget their worries.

This year the theme is the arrival of the Portuguese monarchy in Brazil 200 years ago. Things can get a bit hot and sweaty during Carnival. So to be on the safe side the government’s handing out 20 million condoms. Heavy downpours on the opening day also helped cool the ardour.
