A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out today on the body of the Hollywood actor Heath Ledger who was found dead in an apartment in New York. The 28-year-old Australian had a young daughter from a relationship with fellow actor Michelle Williams, but the couple split last year.

Investigators say Ledger had been due to have a massage at the apartment. The housekeeper went to tell him that the masseuse had arrived but found him dead in bed.

Police are investigating if Ledger died from a drug overdose – it has been claimed sleeping pills were found near the body.

Police, journalists and crowds of distraught fans gathered outside the apartment in Manhattan’s fashionable SoHo neighbourhood.

Perth-born Ledger rose to prominence and won an Oscar Best Actor nomination for his role as a gay cowboy in the film “Brokeback Mountain”.

He also starred in the movie “I’m not there”, inspired by the life of Bob Dylan, and is shortly to be seen as the Joker in the upcoming Batman release “The Dark Knight.”
