EU consumers might soon be checking clone labels when grocery shopping…

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says
cloned food products are safe to eat.

According to an official in Brussels, a definitive green light in May could bring meat and milk from cloned animals to stores across the bloc in the next couple of years.

The European Commission says it plans to survey public opinion in the 27 member states.

Many consumer and religious groups strongly oppose cloning.

Last year the US Food and Drug Administration gave cloned beef, pork and goat products the go-ahead – and Brussels believes cloning is likely to develop internationally.

Britain and Germany are leading the push to allow the products to be sold in the EU.

London has already confirmed that it has imported a cloned animal.

More than half of shoppers in a recent survey by the
International Food Information Council said they were unlikely to buy food made from cloned animals.
