A gala dinner has been held to celebrate the 70th birthday of the Spanish King. Juan Carlos’ actual birthday was on Saturday, celebrated with his family in private. Last night, however, some 450 people, including members of the government, were invited to the royal palace.

The Spanish prime minister paid tribute to the King: “All of us here believe this period has been the most fruitful in contemporary Spain. We all believe it’s extraordinary what he’s contributed to this common success.”

King Carlos became the head of state in 1975 after the death of the right-wing dictator Francisco Franco.
